John Shingleton

Born in the UK and raised and educated to Masters level in France, John first cut his law teeth in the police forces of the UK and NZ, gaining invaluable real-life experience of everyday social issues. He was admitted to the bar in 1997 and worked for 5 years in the Wellington area in general practice, before moving with a young family to Christchurch in 2002. From there, he grew and ran a successful business and employment law practice.

In 2016, he left his position as managing partner of a traditional Christchurch law firm to disrupt the legal industry with onlinelawyers.nz and a more modern way of delivering legal services.

John also assisted in the development and growth of Waimak Law with Donna Cherry, before Donna retired from practice in August 2018.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of Fit for Work and involved in other corporate entities, he has provided assistance with governance for company boards. The author of several legal and business-based articles and blogs, and a regular contributor to Canterbury Today and other publications.

John is recognised by many as a strategic thought leader and proponent of progressive value-based business services that lead to better outcomes.

John is also involved in research into how smart contracts and AI will revolutionise the legal industry. John is a member of an international group of lawyers who discuss and share thoughts and ideas on the legal commercial implications of blockchain.

In his spare time, John keeps fit by partaking in masters rowing and he collects vinyl records.
